Chapter 1 Flashcards
Osmosis
Osmosis is the transportation of water particles from areas of high to low concentrations.
Turgid
a plant cell fully inflated with water
Lysis
bursting an animal cell by osmosis
Plasmolyse
Plasmolysed – a plant cell that has lost water causing the cell membrane to be pulled away from the inside of the cell wall
Crenation
shrinking an animal cell by osmosis
Magnification
Use the IAM triangle actual size = size of image / magnification
Conversions
Nm * 1000 = Um *1000 =Mm *10= Cm *10 =M * 1000 = Km
Resolution
Ability to distinguish between two different points in an object
Nucleus
Part of an eukaryote cell eg plant or animal that stores genetic info
Cytoplasm
Where chemical reactions happen in the cell
Cell membrane
Lets substances move in and out of the cell
Mitochondria
Allows aerobic respiration
Ribosomes
Allows protein synthesis
Cell wall
On a plant cell to keep its structure
Large permanent vacuole
Contains sap to keep the plant smooth
