Chapter 1 Flashcards
biology
the scientific study of life
umbrella of biology
zoology: study of animals
mircobiology: the study of bacteria and viruses (non-living)
botany: the study of plants
mycology: the study of fungi
ecology: the study of how different organisms interact with their environments
lifes hierarchy of organization
1) biosphere
2) ecosystem
3) community
4) population
5) organism
6) organ systems
7) organs
8) tissues
9) cells
10) molecules
11) atoms
all living things on earth are within what is called the
biosphere: consists of all enviornments on earth hat supports life
the biosphere includes
most areas of land, water bodies, and the lower atmosphere
within the biosphere, the individual enviornments can be further broken down into
ecosystems: are a broad group that can be broken down all the way to the smallest level: the atomic level
cells are the
platform for life ( smallest unit of life)
molecules and atoms are
no longer living
ecosystem
these encompass all living organisms and non-living matter existing within a particular enviornment
this includes: all components of the enviornment with which the living organims interact
ex) soil, air, sunlight, water
community
these groups of organims composed of a number of different species that live within an ecosystem
ex) deer, lady bug, squirrel
population
these are all individuals of a particular species living within a particular area
ex) all of the lady bugs living within the park
organism
this is the individual unit of the population
ex) a lady bug from the lady bug population
a deer from the deer population
organ systems
this is a group of several organs which work together to preform specific functions
ex) the nervous system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system, ect
organs
this is a structure comprised of tissues which together as a group work to preform specific functions
ex) heart: composed of muscle tissue, connective tissue
tissues
these are made of similar cell types and each tissue has a specific function
each organ is made of several different tissues types
