how is psychology different from philosophy
emphasis on science and scientific method. (observation and then generating predictions)

contents and process of subjective experience: sensations, thoughts, and emotions

3 types of psychologists
clinical psychologists, applied psychologists, and research psychologists
clinical psychologists
diagnoses and treats psychological problems. work in clinics or private practice. branch of counseling psychologists that deals with adjustment problems (marriage/family). clinical and counseling make up majority of the profession
psychiatrists
also work with psychological problems but are medical doctors and can prescribe medicine
applied psychologists
extend everyday psychology to every day situations. ex. school, forensic, industrial,
research psychologists
psychologists who try to discover the basic principles of behavior and mind. usually specialize. ex. behavioral neuroscientists, personality, cognitive, developmental, and social psychologists
empiricism
the idea that knowledge comes directly from experience
