Chapter 1 Flashcards
Describe the development of the history of personality:
Psychology emerged from the ideas borrowed from philosophy and physiology to become and independent and primary experimental science
Who was largely responsible for the development to make psychology and experimental science? Why?
Wilhelm Wundt:
Concerned with studying human behavior
Psychologists at that time only studied those processes which could be controlled/manipulated by the experimenter.
Who is the American psychologist that opposed Wilhelm Wundt’s focus on conscious experience.
John B. Watson
American psychologist, Watsons movement was called behaviorism.
Behaviorism
Behaviorism presents a mechanistic picture of human beings as well ordered machines that automatically respond to external stimuli
Freud called his theory of personality; Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis was based on Freud’s clinical observations of his patients feeling and past relationships, which he creatively interpreted
Who formalized and systematized the study of personality in American psychology in the 1930’s?
Gordon Allport
What has been added to the theory of personality since Gordon Allport’s time?
Since the study of personality includes: The lifespan approach The trait approach The humanistic approach The cognitive approach Psychoanalysis Behaviorism
Definition of personality
Personality is derived from the Latin work persona, which refers to a mask used by actors in a play. We may conclude that personality refers to our external and visible characteristics which may be stable or not stable over a persons life.
Definition could be:
An enduring and unique cluster of characteristics that may change in response to different situations
Personality and the Internet and social networking
Research shows most people are honest about their online faces. Studies suggest social networking sites do convey accurate images or impressions of the personality profiles we offer
However a person may want to impress others. Researchers have shown that online social networking sites like FB can both shape reflect our personalities
Ethnic and Gender Issues in personality
Early studies by personality theorists used participants that were nearly all white men of European or American heritage. Study of ethnic minority was limited.
But theorists would imply that their scientific findings were valid for all people regardless of gender race or ethnic origin
Today research across culture, naturalistic observation, and our own experience tell us that culture and ethnic issues really impact personality.
Assessment in the study of personality; Assessment
Assessment measures are vital in our attempt to understand personality by differentiating between normal and abnormal behaviors and feelings. Clinicians are able to diagnose disorders and determine the best course of therapy. School psychologists assess student learning problems; counseling psychologists measure job applicants for certain employment requirements. Psychologists conducting research assess the participants to account for their behavior in an experiment or to correlate their personality traits with other measurements
Assessment in the study of personality; Standardization
Standardization involves the consistency or uniformity conditions and procedures for administrating a test. Everyone must take test under same conditions and in the same or similar environment as others.
Assessment in the study of personality; Reliability
Reliability involves the consistency of response to an assessment device. There are several methods to determine the reliability of a test before use. The test retest method involves giving a subject the same test twice over a period of time to see if the two sets of scores on the tests are highly correlated
Reliability is further measured by the use of the equivalent forms method which consists of two comparable forms of a test
Assessment in the study of personality; the split halves method
Split halves method is where a test is administered one and then the scores of half the test are compared with the scores of the other half
Assessment in the study of personality; Validity
Validity refers to whether the assessment device measures what it is intended to measure. A good test must first have good validity and good reliability
