Chapter 1-5 Flashcards
What are the properties of life?
Order, reproduction, growth & development, energy processing, response to environment, regulation, evolutionary adaptation.
hierarchy of life order (smallest to largest) :
Molecule, organelle, cells, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem,
Biosphere.
difference between deductive and inductive reasoning :
Inductive: to draw general conclusions; deductive: come up with ways to test hypothesis.
What are the parts of the Scientific Process?
- Observation
- Ask a question & do background research
- Create hypothesis
- Test the hypothesis
- Results
- Conclusion (accept or reject hypothesis)
control group and experimental group :
Control group: can is controlled. Experimental group: is tested – not controlled.
difference between a positive and a negative control :
Positive = positive result negative = cause negative outcome
Define: atom, element, cation, anion…
Atom: smallest unit of matter
Element: a substance that can’t be broken down
Cation: positive ion
Anion: negative ion
What charge are protons, electrons, neutrons?
Protons are ( + ), electrons are ( - ), neutrons are ( o ) meaning no electric charge.
Which elements are most abundant in life?
C, H, O, N
How are elements arranged on the periodic table?
By increasing atomic #’s
What makes up the atomic mass?
of protons & neutrons.
What makes an element reactive?
The # of electrons in outer shell of an atom.
The difference between an ionic bond, a covalent bond, and a hydrogen bond :
Ionic bond = atoms gain/lose electrons creating ionic bond
Covalent bond = 2 atoms share pair electrons
Hydrogen bond = half positive water molecule & half negative of another molecule
attaching.
What makes a polar molecule polar?
