Chapter 1 Flashcards
When is carbon organic?
When it is bonded to either carbon or hydrogen
What are the three types of isomers?
1) structural isomers- different framework
2) geometric isomers- cis/trans (cis both top, trans one top one bottom)
3) chiral entantiomers- d/l or r/s (right hand vs left hand)
Condensation
Eliminating h2o, polymerization occurs
Hydrolysis
Adding h2o, depolymerization occurs
Binomial nomenclature
Carolus Linnaeus 1758. Way of naming organisms.
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
Dumb kids play catch over farmer greens shed
Phylogenic trees
Reflects how related two organisms are.
Convergence
Analogy-unrelated but have have structures with similar functions, such as insect and bird wings
Divergence
Homology- common ancestors but different structures and functions now. Such as fish fins and salamander legs
