Inclusion
Special education values social integration and access to general curriculum standards for children with disabilities by providing specialized services in regular classes.
IEP
Individualized Education Program
A school district- developed document that outlines school-based needs, individualized goals. And an array of classroom accommodations and support services for student in special education.
Zero Reject
IDEA principle that prohibits schools from denying access to educational experiences in local public schools.
Continuum of service
A series of placement alternatives necessary to provide individualized special education services ranging from general education classrooms to an array of separate settings depending on the severity and intensity of needs of the student.
IDEA
Individual with Disabilities Education Act
Most recently reauthorized by congress and the George Bush administration in 2004. Provides the foundation of rights and services for children with disabilities to receive special education in American public schools.
Exceptionality
Characteristic of an individual that is particularly unique when compared to the mainstream population.
Disability
Limitations in performing a given task based on an impairment or condition.
Special education
State and federally funded services provided by schools and school districts in response to federal legislation, IDEA, that mandates free and appropriate education individualized to the unique needs of students with disability.
LRE
Least Restrictive Environment
Students with disabilities should be educated as close to the general education classroom as possible while still meeting their individualized educational needs.
