Chapter 1 Flashcards
Research is conducted when:
3
- data are collected
- data are interpreted systematically
- there is a clear goal: to discover new things
Define research
Something that people undertake in order to find out things in a systematic way
Management research
Is different from other kinds of research because it is:
- transdisciplinary (multiple studies are involved with it)
- a design science
Double hurdle of management research
It has to be theoretically and methodology accurate, while at the same time being of practical relevance
Mode 1
-creating fundamental knowledge which only focuses on understanding business and management process and their outcomes
Called basic/fundamental/pure research
Rather than applied nature
- questions are set
- solved by academic interest
- little focus on utilisation of the research by practitioners
Mode 2
Called applied research
Creating practical relevant knowledge, with emphasis on collaboration
-only by direct relevance to managers and is presented in ways these managers can understand and act upon
Successfully conduct business and management research
There has to be a balance between theoretical (mode1) and practical (mode2) part of research
Pure and applied research are two extremes
Multi stages process
Doing research go through several stages
- formulating and clarifying research topic
- reviewing literature
- designing the research
- collecting data
- analysing the data
- the writing
Cross-refer
Not passing through the multi-stage process one at a time, but it will cross-refer to other stages
There is no linear line in the research process
Therefor it is important to have a strong research topic and to revise ideas many times
Difference between ‘methods’ and ‘methodology’ ?
Methods refers to the techniques and procedures used to obtain and analyse data.
Methodology refers to the theory of how research should be undertaken
