Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is a theory?
a. Tested hypotheses that explains WHY nature behaves in a certain way
b. Theories change as more information becomes available
What is a natural law?
A summary of observed, measurable behavior
What are the SI units in Chemistry?
kg, m, s, K, mol, L
What is precision?
The agreement of several values made in the same way
What is accuracy?
The agreement of a particular value with its true value
What are the two types of error?
Random Error: High or Low
Systematic error: Always off the same way
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass
What is a mixture?
Matter of variable composition
What is a heterogenous mixture?
Having visually distinguishable parts
What is a homogenous mixture?
Having visually indistinguishable parts
What kind of mixture is a solution?
Homogenous
What is a compound?
Constant composition
Can be broken into smaller materials by chemical, but not physical means
What is analytical chemistry?
The determination of qualitative and quantitative composition of chemical samples
What is biochemistry?
The study of chemical processes in living things
What is inorganic chemistry?
Study of all chemical substances, elements, and compounds, except those containing carbon
