Chapter 1 Flashcards
Define: statistics
Numerical facts/The science of collecting, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting data; making decisions based on such analyses
Define: descriptive statistics
Methods for organizing/displaying/describing data using tables/graphs/summary measures
Define: inferential statistics
Methods that use sample results to make decisions or predictions about a population
Define: population, target population
Population: all elements (individuals, objects) whose characteristics are being studied
Target population: the population being studied
Define: census
A survey that includes every member of a population
Define: sample survey
The technique of collecting information from a portion of a population
Define: representative sample
A sample that represents the characteristics of a population as closely as possible
Define: random sample
Each sample has an equal chance of being selected
Define: simple random sampling
All samples of equal size have an equal chance of being selected
Define: sampling without replacement
Do not put selected sample back into the population before selecting the next sample
Define: sampling with replacement
Put selected sample back into the population before selecting the next sample
Define: element/member
A specific thing about which information is collected
Define: observation/measurement
Value of a variable
Define: data set
Collection of observations on one or more variables
Define: discrete variable
Can only assume certain values with no intermediate values - countable
