Chapter 1-2 Flashcards
What are the 3 “Rs”
Refinement, Reduction, Replacement
What are laboratory animals or “animals” according to the Guide?
vertebrate animals produced for or used for research, testing and teaching
The Guide endorses what government principles
The US Government Principles for Utilization and Care of Vertebrate animals used in Testing Research and Training (IRAC 1985)
How does an engineering standard differ from a performance standard
Engineering standards are prescriptive with minimal flexibility. Performance stands allows flexibility to get to the final desired outcome
What is a practice standard?
applies profession judgement, peer-reviewed publications, experience etc to get to the desired outcome and improved animal care and use
How should a “must” be interpreted in the Guide
it is imperative or mandatory
How are “should” and “may” interpreted in the Guide
Should-Strong recommendation
May- suggestion to be considered
What 3 elements should compose the “program management”, and work together as a collaboration
IO, AV, IACUC
Which entity of the program management bears the ultimate responsibility
IO- should be the one able to provide resources
What is the general responsibility of the AV
health and well being of all animals used at the institutioo
T or F. All program personnel training should be documented
T
Each institution should or must establish and occupation Health and safety program
MUST
Is it ok to wear outer garments that have been in an animal room outside of the animal facility
No, not unless they are covered
T or F. Personnel should be evaluated for physical and psychological ability to use respiratory protection
T
Tor F. The employee should be able to furnish appropriate PPE and suitable attire for working in hazardous environment (such as with animals or other chemical or bio hazards) prior to being hired?
F
The institution should require this for personnel, as often as necessary
According to the Guide, who, at a minimum, should make up the IACUC
- a veterinarian with appropriate training and experience
- a scientist working with animals
- a non scientist, from within or out of the institution
- a public member
T or F. The public member of IACUC is allowed to be compensated for participation
T. As long as it is not to an amount that would compromise the members representation of the public at large
How many voting members on the IACUC can be from the same administrative unit within the institution?
Not more than 3
same as USDA
According to the Guide how often must program review and facilities inspection by the IACUC occur
At least annually, but more often as necessary
USDA says semi annually- every 6 mo)
What is the general definition of experimental endpoint?
when the scientific aims and objectives have been met
What is the general definition of the human endpoint.
When an animal pain or distress is prevented terminated or relieved.
Ideally, when shoud humane endpoints be defined?
Prior to start of study, and detailed in the protocol
According to the Guide, in what 3 circumstances are multiple major surgeries acceptable
- on the same protocol and essential to scientific aim
- scientifically justified
- necessary for clinical care
When is is necessary for the IO to submit a request to USDA/APHIS to allow a regulated animal to undergo mulitple major surgeries
-when the request is to perform surgery on the same animal in separate unrelated protocols
T or F. Cost savings and animal sparing are acceptable reasons for performing multiple major survival surgery
F.
These can be considered in rare situations, but generally should be discouraged
How often should animals on a food or fluid regulation protocol be weighed.
At least weekly, more often for those requiring greater restriction
Who should approve the use of non-pharmaceutical grade products
must be justified and approved by IACUC
T or F. The Guide is applicable to agricultural animals used in biomedical reasearch
T. For those being used in farm research The Guide for Care and use of Agricultural animals used in research and teaching may be applicable
