Chapter 1 Flashcards
Fluid
A substance which will flow into the shape of its container and exert pressure
What makes a fluid
Must flow, take shape of a container, and exert a pressure.
Matter
A material that occupies space and has weight
Molecule
The smallest particle of a substance that it can be divided into and still maintain the characteristics of that substance.
Mass
A measurement of the amount of material in a body not affected by gravity
Weight
The pull of gravity on a body
Density
The ratio of a substances weight to its volume
Difference between a liquid and gas
A liquid has a definite volume but a gasses volume is determined by the pressure it’s exposed to
Major areas of fluid power
Hydraulics and pneumatics
Fluid distribution systems
Utilizes a fluid but not for power transmission purposes
What is specific gravity
How many times heavier a particular substance is than an equal volume of water (density of sub/density of fresh water)
What percentage of air is in oil
Oil is 10% air by volume
