Centrifugal Pumps Flashcards
Pumps perform by?
Lifting liquids against gravity or exhaust gases
Pump capacity
Amount of material the pump can move in a given time
What Effects a pumps capacity
Viscosity of fluid, RPM, and impeller size
Pumps are rated in
Gallons per minute. GPM
2 pressure specifications for pumps
PSI and head
Pressure is;
Force per unit area
Impeller types
Open, semi open, and enclosed
Types of pump casings
Split case and end suction
A Wear rings job is;
To Protect pump casing from getting worn
Types of seals
Compression packing and mechanical seal
Parts of pump packing
Packing chamber, packing rings, lantern rings, and gland follower
Flush water is from, performs what duty’s?
the liquid the pump is moving or external sources like city water.
It Cools the shaft, keeps packing wet, and flushes contaminants
Positive head is;
Positive pressure, helps feed the pump inlet because of the weight of the Column of fluid
Negative head
Negative pressure (vacuum)
the distance the liquid must be lifted to the pump.
Discharge head
Pressure at the discharge of the pump to where you need the liquid to go
Total head
The total distance which the pump lifts and pushes the liquid
Lantern ring
Allows lubrication (water) to disperse, reach the shaft and packing rings.
Pressure rating for centrifugal pump
Max rating is 250 psi. They’re not capable of withstanding high pressures
Impeller installation
Vane tips should point away from the flow direction. Centrifugal pumps are NOT reversible
How to increase pressure rating for a centrifugal pump
Must use a multistage pump to get limit above 250 psi
