Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the anatomy of the “naked eye” more properly known as?
Gross Anatomy
What are the two kinds of microscopic anatomy and their approximate magnifications?
Light microscopic (up to x1000)
Electron microscopic (up to x300,000)
What are the 6 levels of biological organization?
- Chemical
- Cellular
- Tissues
- Organs
- Organ Systems
- Organisms
What are the 4 types of tissues in the human body?
- Muscle tissue (movement)
- Nervous Tissue (electrical current)
- Epithelial Tissue (covering, lining, protecting)
- Connective Tissue (protection, support)
Homeostasis
A state of relative stability within the internal environment of an organism
Negative feedback loop
Homeostatic feedback loop in which the response opposes or removes the signal
Ex: Insulin lowering blood sugar when it is detected to be too high.
Positive feedback loop
A non-homeostatic feedback loop in which the response reinforces the stimulus until an endpoint is reached
Ex: hormonal control of uterine contraction
What are the 6 steps of the scientific method?
- Observation
- Hypothesis
- Experiment
- Data Collection/Analysis
- Conclusion
