Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is a Science
The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of natural phenomena.
Chemistry
The science of the composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems.
Scientific Method
Hypothesis
Theory
Law
Hypothesis
a guess before testing data
Theory
better explained hypothesis with enough information on data to support it
Law
A law is an explanation.
It something observed multiple times w/o changes in the end result
Steps in Scientific Method
- Collect facts or data (educated guess)
- Analyze data to find trends
- Formulate hypothesis for data that can be further tested (initial guess)
- Plan & do additional experiments (continue testing)
- Modify the hypothesis for compatibility with tested data (change hypothesis until it explains experiment)
Matter
anything with mass and occupies space
- made of atoms
Elements
contain only 1 kind of atom
Compounds
contain two or more kinds of atoms
States of Matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Solid
- definite shape & volume
- incompressible
- held together by strong forces of attraction
Liquid
- takes the shape of its container
- indefinite shape & definite volume
- compressible
- held together by strong forces of attraction
- mobile, move around ea. other
Gas
- takes the shape and volume of its container
- indefinite shape & volume
- compressible
- particles are independent bc weak forces of attraction
- far apart and small compared to volume occupied
Crystalline solids
regular repeating 3-dimensional geometric patterns
