What is under our control? What is not under our control?
We can control our responses to thoughts and feelings. We cannot control when thoughts and feelings appear.
In essence, what is the path to success?
- Spend time doing what you care about.
- Acknowledge and accept thoughts and feelings without fusing with them.
What approach does ACT stand for?
- Accept your thoughts and feelings with kindness.
- Choose a direction you value.
- Take action that embodies your values.
What are the effects of struggling with anxiety and other challenging thoughts and feelings?
- Increases suffering, overall
- Increases sympathetic nervous system activity
- Worsens memory
- Requires effort
- Short term efficacy
- No effect on quality of thoughts/feelings
- Pulls you out of your life
What is the problem with the serenity creed?
It doesn’t tell us what we can change!
What happens when you live a life driven by your values?
All kinds of thoughts, feelings, and sensations arise, many of them of a challenging nature.
How should we approach lapses?
- Expect lapses to occur
- Don’t interpret lapses as failure
