Chapter 1 Flashcards
Eukaryotic cell
Has membrane-enclosed organelles, the largest being the nucleus.
Prokaryotic cell
Simpler, smaller, does not have a nucleus or organelles.
Producers
Organisms that create their own food. Photosynthesis.
Consumers
Has to eat other organisms to get energy.
Evolution
that living organisms are modified descendants of common ancestors.
The three domains of life
Bacteria, archaea and eukarya
Domain Eukarya
includes all eukaryotic organisms, protists and three kingdoms.
- Plants, which photosynthesize
- Fungiwhich absorb nutrients
- Animals, which ingest their food
5 unifying themes of biology
Organization: Form fits function
Information:(genetic, DNA)
Energy and Matter: Energy flows, enters as light exits as heat. Chemicals cycle.
Interactions: may be beneficial or harmful to one or both of the organisms
Evolution: modified descendants of common ancestors.
Levels of biological orginisation
atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, and biosphere
The 4 nucleotides of DNA
A, G, C, and T.
