chapter 1 Flashcards
ethical principles, variables, impact of sample size on generalisability, hypothesis
Define the principle of debriefing.
The process where participants are informed about the results of the experiment; provides an opportunity to ask questions
Define the principle of deception.
Purposely lying to or misleading participants for personal gain
Define the principle of confidentiality.
Protecting the security of personal information provided by participants, as well as their results
Define withdrawal rights.
The right of a participant to withdraw themselves and their information from an experiment at any given time, without any reason needed.
Define informed consent.
The participant’s capacity to rationally understand what is being asked of them; their ability to actively provide consent
Define independent variables.
The variable being altered or changed; affects the dependent variable and its results
Define dependent variables.
The variable being tested and measured; affected by changes made to it via the independent variable
Define a hypothesis.
A testable prediction; can be phrased as a statement or question
Define the impact of sample size on generalisability.
A smaller sample size can result in a biased sample that cannot be generalised to the larger population of interest.
A sample size of 10% would result in a more representative sample that can be generalised.
