Sexual Harassment
Is any unwelcome sexual advance or behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment 
The right to participate in their own care
Residents have the right to be told of changes in their condition. They have the right to review their medical record. They have the right to choose and change their care providers at any time. 
Tactful
Means showing sensitivity and having a sense of what is appropriate when dealing with others 
Dependable 
NA must be able to make and keep commitments. They must be at work on time. They must carefully do task, avoid abscesses and help their peers when needed. 
Conscientious
People who try to do their best they are guided by a sense of right and wrong. They are alert, observing, accurate and responsible.
Patient
People who are patient do not lose their temper easily. They do not act irritated or complain when things are hard.
Proactive
Means anticipating potential problems and needs before they occur
Ombudsman
Is assigned by law as the legal advocate for residents. The older Americans act (OAA) is a federal law that requires all states to have an ombudsman program.
Respectful
Means valuing other peoples individuality
Ethics
Are the knowledge of right and wrong
Confidentiality
Means to keep private things private
Health insurance, portability, and accountability act (HIPAA)
To keep health information, private and secure.

Protected health information (PHI)
Is information that can be used to identify a person and relates to the patient’s condition, any healthcare that the person has had and payment for that healthcare.
Minimum Data Set
Nurses must complete the MDS for each resident within 14 days of admission and again each year
Liability
Is a legal term. That someone can be held responsible for harming someone else.
Activities Director
Plans activities for residents to help them socialize and stay active
Empathy
Means identifying with the feelings of others
Rehabilitation
Care that is given by specialist to help restore or improve function after an illness or injury.
Hospice care
Holistic, compassionate care given to people who have approximately six months or less to live
Substance abuse
Is the repeated use of legal or illegal drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol in any way that harms oneself or others.
Neglect
Is the failure to provide needed care that results in physical, mental or emotional harm to a person.
Medicare
A federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, have certain disabilities or permanent kidney failure, or are ill and cannot work.
Nursing assistant
The nursing assistant performs assigned tasks, such as measuring vital signs.
Negligence
Means actions or the failure to act or provide the proper care for a resident, resulting in unintended injury.
Malpractice
Occurs when a person is injured due to professional misconduct through negligence, carelessness, or lack of skill.
Home healthcare
Healthcare that is provided in a persons home
Medicaid
A medical assistance program for people who have low income, as well as for people with disabilities.
Advanced practice, registered nurse (APRN)
Is a registered nurse who has completed training at the post graduate level, masters or doctoral.
Charting
Documenting information and observations about residents.
Person centered care
A type of care that places the emphasis on the person needing care and their individuality and capabilities.
Activities of daily living (ADL’S)
Daily personal care task such as bathing dressing, caring for skin, nails, hair and teeth, eating drinking, walking, transferring and elimination.
Trauma Informed Care
Is an approach to patient care that recognizes that people may have experienced trauma in their life’s.
Chain of command
It describes the line of authority and helps to make sure that residents get proper healthcare
Occupational therapist
Helps residents learn to adapt to disabilities. Also may help train residents to perform activities of daily living such as bathing dressing and eating.
Physical therapist
Evaluates a person and develops a treatment plan to increase movement improve circulation, promote healing, reduce pain, prevent disability and regain or maintain mobility
Diagnoses
Medical conditions determined by a doctor 
Speech language pathologist
Identifies communication disorders, addresses factors involved in recovery, and develop a plan of care to meet goals
Registered dietitian
Assesses a residents nutritional status and develops a treatment plan to improve health and manage illness
Informed consent
Is the process by which a person, with the help of a doctor, makes informed decisions about their healthcare.
Incident
Is a accident, problem, or unexpected event during the course of care
Medical social work
Determines residents needs and helps get them support services such as counseling and financial assistance
Unprejudiced
Must give each resident the same quality care, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, race, ethnicity, or condition
The right to make independent choices
Residents can make choices about their doctors, care and treatment. They can make personal decisions such as what to wear and how to spend their time.
Registered nurse
In a long-term care facility and RN coordinates manages and provide skilled nursing care
Terminal illness
A disease or condition that will eventually cause death
Physician assistant
Is a licensed professional, who diagnosis, disease or disability and develops treatment plans
The right to privacy and confidentiality
Residents have the right to speak privately with anyone they have the right to privacy during care and the right to confidentiality regarding every aspect of their lives
Length of stay
The number of days a person stays in a healthcare facility
Skilled care
Is medically necessary care given by a skilled nurse or therapist it is available 24 hours a day 
Residents rights
Specifically how residents must be treated while living in a facility
Cite
In a long-term care facility, to document a problem through a survey
Chronic
A long-term long lasting condition
Outpatient care
Care given to people who have had treatments, procedures, or surgeries and need short term skilled care.
Quality of life
Dignity, choice, and independence are important parts of quality of life
Subacute care
Care given in hospitals or in long-term care facilities for people who need less care than for an acute illness, but more care than a chronic illness
Laws
Are rules set by the government to help people live peacefully together and ensure order and safety.
Assistive Devices
Special equipment that helps a person who is ill or disabled to perform activities of daily living.
The right to be fully informed about rights and services
They must be informed charges both Orally and in writing
Assault
Is a threat to harm a person resulting in the person feeling fearful that they will be harmed
Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA)
To report of poor care and abuse in longterm care facilities, passed in 1987
The right to dignity respect and freedom
Residents must be respected and treated with dignity by caregivers, must not be abused, mistreated or neglected in any way.
Battery
Is the intentional touching of a person without their consent
The right to security of possessions
Residents personal possessions must be safe at all times. Facilities must make an effort to protect resident property from loss or theft
Procedure
A method, or way, of doing something
Rights during transfers and discharges
Residents have the right to be informed of and to consent to any location changes. Residents have the right to stay in a facility unless a transfer or discharge is needed
Financial abuse
Is the improper or illegal use of a persons money, possessions property, or other assets.
Compassionate
Means caring, concerned, empathetic and understanding
The right to complain
Residents have the right to make complaints and voice grievances without fear for their safety or for the quality care they will receive
Acute Care
24 hour skilled care given in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers for people who require short term immediate care for illness and injuries
Domestic Violence
Is abuse by spouses, intimate partners, or family members
The right to visits
Residents have the right to visits from doctors, family members, friends, ombudsmen, clergy members, legal representatives, or any other person
Rights with regard to social services
The facility must provide residents with access to social services. This includes counseling, assistance in soling problems with others and help contacting legal and financial professionals
Adult day services
Care for people who need some help during certain hours but who do not live in the facility where care is given
Policy
Is a course of action that should be taken every time a certain situation occurs
Psychological abuse
Is emotional harm caused by threatening, scaring, humiliating, intimidating, isolating, or insulting a person, or treating an adult as a child
Verbal Abuse
Is the use of spoken or written words, pictures, or gestures that threaten, embarrass or insult a person
Sexual Abuse
Is non consensual sexual contact of any type
Assisted living
Residences for people who do not need 24 hour skilled care, but do require some help with daily care
Professional
Means having to do with work or a job
Long term care
Care given in long term care facilities for people who need 24 hour skilled care
False Imprisonment
Is unlawful restraint of someone that affects the persons freedom of movement; includes both the threat of being physically restrained and actually being physically restrained
Involuntary seclusion
Is the separation of a person from others against the person ms will
Scope of practice
Defines the tasks that health care providers are legally allowed to do according to state or federal law
Professionalism
Is behaving properly when on the job
Personal
Refers to lie outside a job such as as family and friends and home life
Care plan
A plan developed for each resident to achieve certain goals it outlines the step and tasks that the care team must perform
Sympathy
Means sharing in the feelings and difficulties of others
Honest
An honest person tells the truth and can be trusted
Residents and residents family
Providing person centered care means placing the residents well being first and giving her the right to make decisions and choices about her own care
Workplace violence
Is abuse of staff by other staff members, residents or visitors
Licensed practical nurse
A licensed practical nurse or licensed vocational nurse gives medications and treatments, is a licensed professional who completes 1 or 2 years
Physician or doctor
A doctor is a licensed professional who diagnoses disease or disability and prescribes treatment and medication
