Chapter 1 Flashcards
The three tenants of cell theory
1) all organisms are composed of one or more cells
2) the cell is the structural unit of life
3) cells arise only by division from pre-existing cells by passing the genetic information down to the offsprings
What are the basics properties of cells
1) they are highly complex and organized and possess genetic information that allows them to multiple themselves mitosis and meiosis
2) they need energy and it carries to in multiple chemical reactions that are called metabolism
3) they respond to stimuli and can self regulate
What is LUCA?
last universal common ancestor
fundamental differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
- Prokaryotes don’t have nucleus and all their organelles exist in cytoplasm
- eukaryotes are more complex replication process
- prokaryotes have less DNA
the advantages of model organisms
- relatively easy to grow
- reproduce quickly with many offsprings
- cheap to breed
- easy to manipulate
what’s limit cell size
- the volume of cytoplasm that can be supported by nutrients and the genes of the nucleus
- by the distance that substances can efficiently travel through the cytoplasm via diffusion
what is the scientific method
is how we assess new information. a hypothesis is formed and we collect data and do experiments to asses if the hypothesis can be accepted or rejected.
what is an hypothesis?
its a testable statement that form to explain a model
what’s a theory ?
a widely hypothesis that has been tested by many different people
what’s a law?
a statement of fact that has been tested and confirmed over a long period of time with virtually no doubt of its validity
