what is Statistics?
the science of planning studies and experiments, collecting data, and then organizing, summarizing, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and drawing conclusions based on the data.
what is Biostatistics?
the branch of statistics that deals with health related data.
what is a population?
the complete collection of all individuals to be studied
what is a sample?
a subset of the population, selected in such a way that it is representative of a larger population.
what is a census?
data collected from every member in the population
Inferential statistics?
Conclusions about the population drawn from the observations carried out based on the samples collected.
What are descriptive statistics?
It is to organize, summarize, and analyze the data in a clear and understandable way using either numerical or graphical methods.
Is this inferential or descriptive statistics?
A doctor wants to estimate the average BMI for the whole city population.
Inferential
Random sample
A sample drawn in such a way that each unit of the population has a chance of being selected
Simple random sample
If each unit of the population has the same chance of being selected
Statistic
Measurement describing a characteristic of a sample
Parameter
A measurement describing a characteristic of a population
Variable
A value that varies from individual to individual
Qualitative
No number involved. Ie hair colour or a yes or no
Quantitative
A value with a correlating number. Ie height
