Chapter 1 Flashcards
Three basic categories of materials
metals, ceramics, and polymers
how does a shaping process differ from a surface processing operation
Shaping changes geometry (machining or forging), surface processing alters surface (painting, or plating)
Two subclasses of assembly process? Example
Permanent joining: welding. Mechanical fastening: Threaded fasteners like nuts and bolts
define batch production and why it is often used for medium-quantity production products.
Batch: means when materials are processed together through manufacturing operations. In a medium or low quantity situation, the same machines produce other products. When it switches, it takes time. The fact that it is produced as a batch, means that the production time is reduced
What is the difference between a process layout and a product layout in a production facility?
Process layout: Machinery is arranged based on the process. Product must visit the departments where operations will be performed on it. It’s mostly for products that have a large product variety
Product layout: machinery is arranged based on the flow of the products. The travel distance is a lot less, and the flow will direct the product to where it needs to go. Works well for quantity products
Name three departments that are typically classified as manufacturing support departments
manufacturing engineering, production planning, and control, quality control.
