Chapter 1 Flashcards
The defining features of humans
-Bipedalism
Only mammals that stand and walk on 2 legs
-Large brain
Large brain mass relative to body size
-Capacity for complex language
Complex forms of communication, writing, and gestures to communicate
-Opposable thumbs
Well developed muscles that help with precise control
How do humans fit into the study of science?
They can be studied on ANY level of biological organization (atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, etc.…)
What is science?
Study of natural world ( Plant, galaxy, humans, animals, etc)
Scientific method process for testable ideas (1-5)
- Observe and Generalize
- Formulate a hypothesis
- Make a testable prediction
- Experiment and observe
- Modify the hypothesis and retest as needed
make broad generalizations from specific observations
inductive reasoning(SM)
create a statement that can lead to testable deductions.
Generalization (SM)
What you think is happening, but haven’t tested it.
Tentative statement(SM)
to create a specific prediction
Deductive reasoning(SM)
All but one variable are accounted for
Controlled Experiments(SM)
If prediction is false(SM)
The hypothesis must be modified.
If prediction is true(SM)
Only one part of the hypothesis has been tested
Characteristics of living organisms
-Have different molecular compositions(DNA, RNA)
-Require energy and raw materials
-Compose of cells(Unicellular and multicellular)
-Maintain homeostasis
-Respond to external environment( touch, sound)
-Grow and reproduce
- Population has to evolve
