CHAPTER 1 Flashcards
Between-subjects design
Each person is randomly assigned to one of the experimental conditions (different groups of subjects)
Advantages (BS)
- simplicity
- less chance of learning and fatigue effects
Disadvantages (BS)
- more participants needed
- less info on individual
Within subjects design
Each person is assigned to more than one experimiental condition (same for everyone)
Advantages (WS)
- less people needed
- great statistical power
Disadvantages (WS)
- fatigue: longer time of participation
- treatment order may confound results
Mixed design
Experiment icludes at least one BS and one WS
Internal validity, threats and solutions
Trustworthy, accuracy and rigorousness of research methods
Threats:
- confounding variables (random assignment of participants)
- diffusion (isolate groups)
- testing effect (randomizing order of treatment)
External validity, threats and solutions
Meaningful, applicability of the outcome to the real world
Threats:
- participant characteristics (representative sample of the population)
- situations (measurement of DV mimics the real task and experiment context mirrors reality)
