Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
one arrangement of atoms or
molecules that cannot be physically separated.
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
Element has only one type of atom and a compound has at least 2
different kinds
of elements
Intensive properties
are independent of the
amount of the substance
that is present (Boiling point, density,
color, temperature, etc. Don’t need to memorize, just be aware.)
Extensive
are dependent of the
amount of the substance
that is present. (EG mass, volume, energy, etc. Don’t need to memorize, just be aware.)
Can physical changes be easily undone?
yes
Can chemical changes be easily undone?
no
What are the three main steps of the scientific method?
1) Observation
2) Making a hypothesis
3) Experimentation
What is a scientific law?
A conceptual or mathematical statement about
what is observed in nature.
‒ Describes how nature behaves
‒ Cannot be violated; considered fact
A scientific theory
is an
explanation of a law based on
experimental observations.
‒ Attempts to explain why a
natural phenomenon occurs
‒ Can never be conclusively proven
