Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is science as a process.
a way of knowing through doing.
A brief overview of the scientific process
Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Prediction, Test/Experiment.
What are some properties of living things.
Common chemical structures. Common physiology (basic bodily chemistry reaction), Inherited genetic program, Self regulate (Homeostasis)
What are some more properties living things.
Sense and response to stimuli, Capacity to grow and reproduce, Ability to bind and release energy, Capacity to evolve.
What are the three historic views of life.
Mechanistic views, Vitalistic views, Organistic View.
What is the Mechanistic Views
That living things are no different from non-living things and can be described by the law of physics and chemistry.
What is the Vitalistic views.
That living things have special properties and cannot be described using the laws of physics and chemistry.
What is the organistic view.
Living things can be described by the law of physics and chemistry but are unique due to their organization and genetic programming.
