Chapter 1 Flashcards
matter
anything that occupies space and can be perceived by senses
physical properties of materials
characteristics that can be observed without changing the chemical identity of the material EX. state, color, melting point, density
physical change
change in form but not composition EX crack an egg its still an egg
chemical properties of materials
associated with a change in composition (not going to be the same identity)
Reaction or combustion with other types of matter, one or some types of matter are transformed
EX toxicity, oxidation, heat combustion, chemical stability, flammability, coordination number, reactivity
law of conservation of mass
-Total mass remains constant in a chemical change (reaction
- mass in = mass out
pure substance
cannot be separated into any other types of matter by any type of physical process
can be element - cannot be broken down or converted EX Co
Can be compound - substance composed of 2 or more elements EX H2O
Law of constant composition
Pure compound, contains constant proportions (contains same amount for each compound, water is always H2O)
Mixture
consist of 2 or more pure substances that don’t lose individual identities (no chemical reaction in mixture)
can be heterogenous - components remain separate ex. cement, blood, frappe
Homogenous - complete intermingling of components ex . coffee, laundry detergent, bronze (stuff on top is same on bottom)
