what is the anatomical position
body is upright, feet are slightly apart, palms face forward, and thumbs point away from body
axial part
head, neck, and trunk
appendicular part
the limbs
superior (cranial)
towards the upper part of body
inferior (caudal)
towards the lower part of body
anterior (ventral)
towards the front of the body
ex. breastbone is anterior to the spine
posterior (dorsal)
towards the back of the body
ex. heart is posterior to the breastbone
medial
the midline of the body
ex. heart is medial to the arm
lateral
away from the midline of the body
ex. arms are lateral to the chest
intermediate
between a more medial and a more lateral structure
ex. collarbone is intermediate between the breastbone and the shoulder
proximal
closer to the origin of the body. the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
ex. elbow is proximal to the wrist
distal
farther from the origin of the body
ex. knee is distal to the thigh
superficial (external)
towards or at the body surface
ex. the skin is superficial to the skeletal muscles
deep (internal)
away from the body surface. more internal
ex. the lungs are deep to the skin
sagittal
vertical plane dividing the body into left and right halves
