chapt 7 : the particulate nature of matter Flashcards
definition of diffusion
the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
definition of osmosis
the net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane.
does dilute have more or less water ?
more
does concentrated have more or less water
less

why are solids in fixed shape
they are fixed in their positions , hence they cannot move out of their positions to change the shape of the solid
why are liquids in a indefinite shape
they are free to slide across one another and move randomly, hence they can move out of their positions to change the shape of a liquid.
why are gas in a indefinite shape
they move randomly in all directions ,hence it doesn’t have a fix shape
why are solids not compressible
they are unable to be compressed further as they are very closely packed and hhence cannot come any closer to be compressed
why are liquids not compressible
they are unable to be compressed further as they are closely packed and hence cannot be compressed
why are gas compressible
they can be compressed further as they are far apart and has more space to be compressed.
why do solids have a definite volume
particles in a solid are very closely packed to one another hence they are not able to move a closer together to decrease the solids volume
they are also very strongly attracted hence they are not able to move further apart to decrease the solids volume
why do liquids have a definite volume
particles in a liquid are closely packed to one another hence they are not able to move closer together to decrease the volume of liquid.
they are also strongly attracted hence they are not able to move further apart to decrease the liquids volume.
why do gas have a indefinite volume
particles in a gas are far apart hence they are able to come closer together to decrease the gas’s volume. particles also have weak forces of attraction, hence they are also able to move further from each other to increase the gas’s volume.
why are solids not able to flow
solids are not able to flow as they are fixed in their position hence they cannot move out of their position to flow
why are liquids able to flow
liquids are able to flow as they are free to slide across one another, hence they can move out of their position to flow
why are gas able to flow
gas are able to flow as they are randomly moving in all directions , hence they can move out of their position to flow.
why do solids have high density
particles in a solid are very closely packed hence the number of fixed volume is high and the density is high
why do liquids have moderate density
particles in a liquid are closely packed hence the number of fixed volume is high (but lower than solid) and the density is moderately high.
why do gas have low density
particles in a gas are far apart hence the number of fixed volume is low and the density is low.
