Chapt 4 Flashcards
What three bones make up the elbow and forearm?
Humerus, Ulna, and Radius
What is commonly known to meet forming the elbow?
Humerus, ulna, and radius
What does the ulna articulate with?
the humerus
What does the radius articulate with?
the bones of the wrist
What is at the prominent end of the radius?
The radial neck and large radial tuberosity distal to the neck on medial aspect of upper portion of bone shaft
What is at the distal end of the radius?
Radial Styloid Process (also known as Lateral styloid process).
What does the ulna have at the proximal end?
The olecranon process
What does the ulna have at the distal end?
Ulnar styloid process (medial styloid process)
How many joints are in the upper arm and forearm and what are they?
3.
Ulnohumeral Joint (“true” elbow joint)
Radiohumeral joint
Proximal radioulnar joint
What is known as the smooth round surface on the distal view of the lateral epicondyle?
The Capitulum
Where is the olecranon process formed at?
Between the two epicondyles next to the trochlea
What should you be able to see when you bend the elbow joint to 90 degrees?
An isosceles triangle with the olecranon process distal to the epicondyles
What does the capsular ligament fuse and attaches with?
Fuses with the collateral ligaments
attaches to the tricep brachii muscles, olecranon, lateral epicondyle, in the area btw the humerus, trochlea, and the capitulum.
The ligaments that fuse with the anterior portion of the capsular ligament are known as the?
radial (lateral) collateral ligament and the (medial) collateral ligament
What three distinct parts does the ulnar collateral ligament consist of?
An anterior band, posterior band, and transverse band.
The proximal and radioulnar joint is what?
A joint between the forearms head radius and the radial notch of the ulna
What is the annular ligament?
A ligament that runs between the anterior and posterior edge of the radial notch of the ulna and forms a complete ring around the head radius
a ligamentous band of connective teissues that runs between the shafts of the ulna and radius ligament
Interosseous ligament (also known as the interosseous membrane)
What does the interosseous ligament do?
Help distributes pressure between the ulna and radius when force is applied and serves as place of attachment for muscles,
Where is the oblique cord and what is it known for?
Its located at the proximal end of the interosseous ligament and it prevents the separation bwt the ulna and radius
Where is a pivot joint formed at on the wrist?
In the conclave notch of the radius and where the round head of the ulna rotates at
What is the starting position for describing all fundamental movements of any joint is?
The anatomical position
What is an the uniaxial joint that is capable of flexion and extension in the sagittal about the frontal horizontal plane?
The elbow joint
What are the five major muscles that produce motions of flexion and extension of the elbow joint?
Brachialis, Brachioradialis, bicep brachii- Flexion
tricep brachii and anconeus- Extension
What four muscles are responsible for the movements of supination and pronation of the forearm?
Bicep brachii and Supinator- Supination
Pronator Quadratus and Pronator Teres- Pronation
How many anterior muscles are there in the elbow and what are they?
Three; Brachialis, Brachioradialis, and Bicep Brachii
Which anterior muscle is only involved with the elbow joint and its movement of the forearm?
Bicep Brachii
What are the posterior muscles of the elbow?
Tricep Brachii and Anconeus
True or False: The anconeus can perform both actions of elbow extension and movement of the forearm
False. It can only perform one action- elbow extension
What are the muscles of the forearm?
Pronator Teres, Pronator Quadratus, Supinator, adn Bicep Brachii
What can be known as little league elbow or Pitchers elbow?
The inflammation of the pronator flexor group at its origin in the area of the medial epicondyle of the humerus
Who was able to make a substitution for a disruptive ligament and what is the procedure called?
Dr. Frank Jobe in 1974; The Tommy John Surgery
What is tennis elbow?
An inflammation in the area of the supinator-extensor muscle group origin on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus
