What are ECRI Recommendations for RNs
Question the need for 100% oxygen during facial surgery; suggest replacing it with a lower concentration.
Ensure that all flammable preps are thoroughly dry prior to placing drapes on the patient.
Coat facial hair near the surgical site with a water-soluble lubricant.
Keep sponges, gauze, and pledgets moist during surgery.
Place the electrosurgical pencil in a properly placed holster when not in use.
Disconnect and remove contaminated ESU pencils.
Check the ESU alarm before use
Remove foot pedals that are not being used from the area around the surgeon’s feet
Place the laser on standby when it is not being used
Place wet towels around the laser incision site, and use nonreflective instrumentation
Keep activated fiber-optic light sources from contacting surgical drapes or gowns
Store alcohol-based hand rubs in an area away from ignition and heat sources
What to do when theres a fire
R - rescue people
A - signal a code red and location of fire 3 times
C- contain fire and smoke so close doors and shut off gas valves
E - extinguish the fire
E - evacuate to safe area and pull fire pull station on the way out

P - pull the pin
A - aim
S - Squeeze the handle
S - sweep at the base
