Pointing device
A mass storage device. May be hybrid or Solid state
Hard Disk Drive(HDD)
Uses flash memory instead of magnetic storage platters.
Solid State Drive(SSD)
Combines a solid-state cache with magnetic capacity. It uses memory manager to chose the most common files for the fast cache.
Solid-state Hybrid Drive(SSHD)
Can be built into a laptop or connected via USB for reading _____ _____.
Smart card reader
A 32-bit I/O bus that provides a shared 33MHz or 66MHz data path between the CPU and peripheral controllers.
PCI(peripheral component interconnect)
A slot used for diagnostic cards and WiFi networking on newer laptops
mPCIe
A WiFi adapter or a USB based wireless adapter
wireless card
The type of electrical current supplied by batteries or by a PCs power supply.
DC(direct current)
made with either a passive or active matrix display grid
LCD(liquid crystal display)
A type of display that uses organic compounds that emit light.
OLED(organic light emitting diode)
special key on laptop keyboards that when pressed enables other keys to perform additional tasks.
Fn(function key)
a device that enables laptops and other mobile devices to use devices that are not built in.
Docking station
A lock that uses a multistranded security cable to secure a laptop. Also called a Kensington lock.
Cable lock
A feature of two-in-one devices that allows it to be both a tablet and laptop
Rotating/removable screen
Computer simulations projected into an eye covering headset or images layered on camera captures of the real world.
VR/AR(Virtual reality/Augmented reality
Worldwide system of satellites that provides info concerning the locations of anything with a receiver
GPS(global positioning system)
A type B USB cable used in cameras, phones etc.
Mini USB
The proprietary, reversible Apple iOS sync/charging USB 2.0 connector used on older iOS devices
Lightning
A method for sharing a smartphones internet access via WiFi
Hotspot
Feature included in many mobile devices for data transfer and shopping.
NFC(near field communication)
A short-range wireless network used primarily by mobile devices.
Bluetooth
Wireless technology waves used to transmit data ie. TV remotes.
IR(infrared)
A mobile device setting that turns off any wireless antenna in the device including cellular and GPS antennas.
Airplane mode
The process of connecting two wireless devices together.
Pairing
Similar to a password, a number that identifies an authorized user.
PIN(Personal Identification Number)
Email protocol used by client computers to download or receive email. Uses port 110.
POP3(Post office protocol ver. 3)
an Email protocol that enables messages to remain on the email server so they can be retrieved from any location. Uses port 143.
IMAP4(Internet message access protocol)
a protocol that is used for securing online transactions. Predecessor of TLS.
SSL(Secure sockets layer)
A standard for secure email connectivity.
S/MIME(Secure/multi purpose internet mail extensions)
List in a device used to select from available phone carriers for access to phone systems.
PRL(Preferred roaming list)
firmware in a cellular network-enabled device that translates cell signals to and from the onboard CPU.
Baseband
Number used to identify a cell phone on the GSM, UMTS, LTE and iDen networks.
IMEI(International mobile station equipment identity) number
Number used to identify a subscriber using a cell network.
IMSI(International mobile subscriber identity) number
private and secure network connection that is carried by an insecure public network such as the internet.
VPN(Virtual private network)
