The Prime Minister
- Head of the UK government
- Responsible for the policy and decisions of the government
- Appoints members of the Cabinet
- Current PM : Theresa May
Deputy Prime minister
- Over the past 100 years, four cabinet ministers have held the title of deputy prime minister.
- The responsability have varied over the years
The Cabinet
- the supreme decision making body in government
- every Tuesday, members of cabinet meet in the Cabinet room (10 Downing Street) to discuss the big issues of the dat.
- The prime minister chairs the meeting, select its members and also recommends their appointment as ministers by the Monarch
- Senior cabinet positions are appointed by the PM (the most senior members are the Deputy prime minister, foreign secretary, chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary)
- The decisions taken their become government policy, if supported in the HoC.
The Cabinet Committees System
- Cabinet committees reduce the burden on the Cabinet by enabling collective decisions to be take by a smaller group of ministers.
The shadow Cabinet
- made up of MPs and Members of the House of lords from the second largest party, or the official ill opposition party.
- The opposition party appoints and MP to shadow each of the members of the cabinet. They are known as Front bench.
Burden
The main responsability for achieving a specified aim or task Cabinet office.
Chancellor of the Exchequer
The chief finance minister of the UK who prepares the nation’s annual budgets
Civil service
the permanent professional branches of a state’s administration, excluding military and judicial branches and elected politicians
Coalition
A temporary alliance for combined action, especially of political parties forming a government
Collective responsibility
every member’s responsibility regardless of an individual member’s involvement in decisions or the member’s position or rank
Dismiss
Remove from employment or office, typically on the grounds of unsatisfactory performance
Foreign secretary
The government minister who heads the foreign and commonwealth office
General election
The election of representatives to a legislature from constituencies throughout the country
Home Secretary
The secretary of state in charge of the home office
Hung parliament
A parliament in which no party has won enough seats to control the parliament and form a government
