Amendment
People who were more in favor of the states rights rather than the constitution
Anti federalists
Went into effect in 1781 creating a confederation. Created a national congress with each state getting one vote, each state has its own sovereignty and 9 out of 13 states needed to pass anything through legislation
Articles of confederation
A historian who argues that the founders were largely motivated by the economic advantage of their class in writing the constitution
Beard, Charles
Declaring a person guilty without trying him in a trial
Bill of Attainder
The elaborate system of divided spheres of authority provided by the US constitution as a means of controlling the power of government. The separation of powers among the branches of the national government, federalism, and the different methods of selecting national officers are all part of this system
Checks and balances
An alliance of factions, an alliance between different interest groups or parties to achieve some political goal
Coalition
The convention in Philadelphia May 25 to sept 17, 1787 that debated and agreed upon the constitution of the US
Constitutional convention
Arresting someone for breaking a new law a month that wasn’t law a month ago
Ex post facto law
A group with a distinct political interest, a group of people sharing a common interest
Faction
A governmental system in which authority is divided between two sovereign levels of government: national and regional

Written by James Madison. Factions or accused factions could be a threat to the gov. Feared minute ties would be overruled by majority only way to address issue of factions is to use a republican form of gov

The agreement of the constitution convention to create a two-chamber congress with the house apportioned by population and the senate apportioned equally by state
Great compromise
The power of courts to decide whether a governmental institution has acted within its constitutional powers and if not to declare its action bull and void
Judicial review
The power of an executive to veto some provisions in an appropriations bill while approving others
Line-item Veto
The authority granted congress in article 1 section 8 of the constitution “to make all laws which shall be necessary and proper” for the implementation of its enumerated powers
Natural rights
A constitutional proposal for a strengthened congress but one in which each state would have a single vote, thus granting a small state the same legislative power as a larger state
New Jersey plan
The firm of government in which representative officials met to decide on policy issues.
Republic
The division of the powers of government among separate institutions or branches
Separation of powers
Rebellions led by Daniel and farmers in western Massachusetts in 1786-87 protesting mortgage foreclosures. Highlighted the need for a strong national government

These rights are fundamental or natural rights guaranteed to people naturally I stress of by law. Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness.
Unalienable rights
A constitutional proposal forms strong congress with two chambers, both of which would be based on numerical representation, thus granting more power to the larger states
