Chap.7: How can we build sustainable cities? Flashcards
What are cities?
definition
An urban area within a country
What are some features of cities?
4 points
- Large population size
- High population density
- Built-up area
- Range of functions
What is a high population density?
Measurement of the number of people living in a unit area of land
Measured by number of people in an area/Land area
What are built up areas?
Land surface mostly covered by buildings, extensive infrastructure and transport
What is the relationship between cities and rural areas?
Rural areas have:
1. lower population size
2. Lower population density
3. Have fewer functions
4. Less built-up
What is Rural Urban Migration?
People who move from rural to urban areas due to push or pull factors
What opportunities are there for people in cities?
2 points
- Education and emplotment
- Technological innovation
How is education and employment an opportunity?
Equip with useful knowledge-> apply to gain employment->engaged in paid work
What is technological innovation?
The use of scientific knowledge to create new products or services
What challenges do people face in cities?
3 main
- Water pollution
- Air pollution
- Competition for natural resources- Land and water
How is water pollution a challenge to cities?
- Its caused by improper management of house, and industrial waste
- When released into waterways, threatens human and aqautic life
How is increased air pollution a problem?
- Prolonged exposure can lead to infections, lung cancer and even death
- Poor health leads to increased demand on the healthcare sector
How is limited land resource a problem in cities?
Cities require large amounts of natural resources to build infrastructure.
Competition arises when there is high demand by cities when there is limited resources
May expand into rural areas
How can cities sustainably be built and managed?
- Environment Management,
- Management of physical envirnment
- Management of hazards - Improve quality of life
- Provide safe housing
- Provide a variety of transportation modes
- Considering the needs of different groups
How does managing the physical environment helping cities be sustainable?
Cities-> Large enviromental footprint-> reduces quality of environment to even other countries
Helps to regulate use of natural resources, minimise negative impact
Laws:
1. Since 2013, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei adopted the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCA) to enact lawas such as Environmental Protection and Air Pollution Prevention and Control (EPAPPC)
2. License plate lottery to limit number of new vehicles on the road, restricts the cars using the road everyday.
How to manage hazards sustainably?
- Use of better quality building materials
- Land use planning
How to improve the Quality of Life?
- Providing safe housing
- Providing a variety of transportation modes
- Considering the needs of different groups
How does providing safe housing improve quality of life?
Housing is meant to shelter people from extreme weather elements
Squatter settlements are unsafe (Location) which leads to poor quality of life. Happens when housing supply is too expensive
How does providing a variety of transport mode help improve quality of life?
Transport modes-> refer to ways people and goods move from one location to another
Benefits:
1. Ease of travelling around city, more affordable. Reduce CO2 fight global issue
2. Reduction in traffic congestion (buses increases capacity)
3. Reduction in environment pollution in cities with less cars (less fuel consumption)
How does considering the needs of different groups improve quality of life?
Many cities have ageing population
Thinking through on what can help those with disabilities to improve quality of life.
SG adopted a Universal Design Concept ( Children, elderly) so its safe for everyone
