Chap.10: Transport Systems and Their Spatial Distribution Flashcards
How can transport systems be characterized?
- Density of network
- Quality of infrastructure
- Variety of modes
Example of train station and its density of nodes/transport network
The Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network has expanded from a 6km route to 360 km by 2030
Where are transport nodes located within a city?
- Places with high concentration of activities
- High level of accessibility
Examples and reasons for places of high concentration of activities
Raffles place, City Hall, and Bayfront MRT stations are major nodes, access to commercial and CBD
Major nodes like Little India, Chinatown and Botanic Gardens MRT are tourist attractions, have rich heritage
What are indicators of places with high level of accessibillity?
Short travel time, low travel cost, can reach many places
What roles do transport systems play?
Transport systems enable movement of:
* People
* Goods and services
Why is movement of people a role that transport systems play+example
- It facilitates movement to and fro homes and work places
- Provides social activities to improve well-being
Eg. Singapore’s LTA invested heavily in shelted walkways, so commuters can reach amenities conveniently from transport nodes
Why is movement of goods and services a role that transport systems play+example
- Transport systems are impt for the functioning of economic activities (eg. e-commerce)
- Delivery services are needed for people
Eg. Residents of Mexico City depens on water supply trucks if they live far from water pipes
Eg. In California, water trucks are delivered to household during droughts
Eg. Tank trucks deliver petroleum to petrol kiosks
How do transport systems support connection?
Facilitates connection between:
* Transport modes
* Cities
How does connection between transport nodes support connection?
- Journeys between locations can be unimodal (one transport mode) / intermodal (more than one)
- Efficient network is one with good intermodal connectivity
- Good intermodal connectivity: seamless movement of goods and people using 2 or more modes
How does connection between cities support connection?
- Direct/ indirect
- Point to point and hub and spoke
Eg. Singapore Changi airport is a **super hub **as it processes over a million tonnes of goods a year
