Chap3 computer and components Flashcards
memory cache
high speed memory external to processor which stores data which the processor will need again
random access memory
primary memory unit that can be written to read from
Read only memory
primary memory unit that can be only read from
Dynamic RAM
type of RAM chip that needs to be constantly refreshed
Static RAM
type of RAM chip that uses flip-flop and does not need refreshing
Programmable ROM
type of ROM chip that can be programed once
Erasable PROM EPROM
type of ROM that can be programmed more than once using UV light
Hard disk drive
type of magnetic storage device that uses spinning disk
Latency
The lag in a system. For EX: the time to find a track on a hard disk, which depend on the time taken for the disc to rotate around to its read-write head
Fragmented
storage of data in non-consecutive sectors; for ex: dur to editing and deletion of old data
Removable HDD
portable HDD, that is external to the computer; can be connected via a USB part when required
Solid State drive
Storage media with no moving part that relies on movement of electrons
Electronically erasable programable read-only memory (EEPROM)`
Read only chip that can be modified by the user, which can be erased and written
Flash memory
a type of EEPROM, particularly suited to use in drive such as SSD, memory stick
Optical Storage
CD,DVD, Blue-ray disc that use laser light to read and write data
