chap 8 models of atoms and molecules ( sec 1 ) Flashcards
What is an atom?
an atom is the simplest unit of elements
What is the charge of a neutron?
No charge
What is the charge of a proton?
It is positively charged
What is the charge of an electron?
It is negatively charged
What is the charge of a nucleus?
Since it is made up of neutrons and protons, it is positively charged.
What is the…
- relative charge
- relative mass
- position in an atom for protons?
- +1
- 1
- within the nucleus
What is the…-
relative charge
- relative mass
- position in an atom for neutrons?
- 0
- 1
- within the nucleus
What is the…
- relative charge
- relative mass
- position in an atom for electrons?
- –1
- 1/1840
- around the nucleus
Why is an atom electrically neutral?
Since the number of protons and the number of electrons are equal, the positive and negative charges in an atom is balanced. ( and neutrons do not have any charges, thus they do not contribute to the overall charge of an atom )
If there are
- 6 protons
- 6 electrons how many neutrons are there?
6, 7 , or 8 ( may vary )
*Why is it possible that same types of atoms have varying masses?
Electrons have mass, but they are much lighter as compared to protons and neutrons, thus the mass of the electrons in an atom are considered negligible and do not add up to the mass of an atom
What are molecules?
Molecules are made up of two or more atoms that are chemically combined
What are the two types of molecules
molecules of an element and molecules of a compound
**What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and electrons, but different numbers of neutrons
*How do you define ions?
when the number of protons and electrons are not the same
