Chap. 8 (and maybe 9) Flashcards
What is Fermentation?
A partial degradation of sugars that occurs without Oxygen (O,2)
What is Thermal Energy?
Kinetic energy associated with random movements of molecules and atoms
What is Kinetic energy?
Energy associated with the relative motion of objects
What is Chemical Energy?
Potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction
What is Potential Energy?
Energy that isn’t in motion
2nd law of Thermodynamics
Every energy transfer or transformation increases the entropy in the universe
1st Law of Thermodynamics (aka Principle of Conservation of Energy)
Energy can be transferred or transformed, but can’t be created or destroyed
Catabolic Process
Aka Breakdown pathway - A process that releases energy as it breaks down complicated molecules to form simpler ones
Anabolic Process
A process that consumes energy as it builds complicated molecules from simple ones
Spontaneous process
Increase of entropy without energy (doesn’t require outside input of energy)
Non-Spontaneous Process
Decrease of entropy with energy supplied (happens on its own)
(Triangle) G
Change in free energy
(Triangle) H
Change in total energy
T
Absolute temperature
(Triangle) S
Change in entropy
