Chap 8 Flashcards
Population
A population is defined as a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area
Density
The density, of a substance is its mass per unit volume. The symbol most often used for density is ρ, although the Latin letter D can also be used.
Dispersion
Scattering is a term used in physics to describe a wide range of physical processes where moving particles or radiation of some form, such as light or sound,
Growth rate
The rate, or speed, at which the number of organisms in a population increases.
Reproductive
The human reproductive system includes the male reproductive system which functions to produce and deposit sperm; and the female reproductive system which functions to produce egg cells,
Potential
Voltage, electric potential difference, electric pressure or electric tension is the difference in electric potential between two points,
Exponential growth
takes place when a population’s per capita growth rate stays the same, regardless of population size,
Carrying capacity
a species’ average population size in a particular habitat.
Niche
the role an organism plays in a community.
Competition
the interaction of individuals that vie for a common resource
Predation
one organism kills and consumes another
Parasitism
relationship between two species of plants or animals in which one benefits at the expense of the other
Mutualism
association between organisms of two different species in which each benefits.
Commensalism
a relationship between individuals of two species in which one species obtains food or other benefits from the other without either harming or benefiting the latter
Symbiosis
any of several living arrangements between members of two different species
