17
Q

Why is iron needed?

A

for making haemoglobin

18
Q

what is the iron deficiency disease?

A

anaemia, not enough oxygen gets delivered to tissues

19
Q

peristalsis:

A

rhythmical muscular contractions that move food through the alimentary canal

20
Q

what foods contain fibre?

A

All fruits and vegetables, oats, wheat, barley, brown rice

21
Q

why do we need water in our cells?

A

metabolic reactions only take place if the chemicals are in a solution

22
Q

why do we need water in plasma?

A

it transports many important nutrients around our body

23
Q

why do we need water in the alimentary canal?

A

to dissolve enzymes and nutrients, so digestion can take place

24
Q

What does the human digestive system contain?

A

The alimentary canal, liver, and pancreas

25
Q

what happens to our food after it is broken down?

A

it is absorbed into the blood and delivered to all our cells

26
Q

ingestion-

A

taking food in, using lips, teeth, and tongue

27
Q

assimiliation-

A

nutrients previously absorbed into the blood are being used for energy

28
Q

what is the alimentary canal?

A

a long tube that runs from mouth to anus

29
Q

what is the alimentary canal lubricated by?

A

mucus

30
Q

what are goblet cells?

A

cells that line the walls of the alimentary canal and secrete mucus

31
Q

what is the name of the muscles that can contract to close one particular part of the alimentary canal?

A

Sphincter muscles

32
Q

what is saliva a mixture of and what are the purposes of each one?

A

Water, mucus, and amylase;
Water- dissolves substances in food
mucus- binds food together in small ball
amylase- begins to digest starch

33
Q

what is the purpose of the enzymes produced in the stomach?

A

to digest proteins; proteases

34
Q

pH of the stomach:

A

2 (optimum for enzymes)

35
Q

how is the pancreas connected to the alimentary canal?

A

A tube called the pancreatic duct leads from the pancreas into the duodenum

36
Q

what happens in the ileum?

A

absorbtion

37
Q

how does bile flow into the alimentary canal and what is its purpose?

A

Produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, flows along bile duct into duodenum and mixes with the food. It is an alkaline mixture, neutralising the acidic mixture from the stomach.

38
Q

what 4 types of teeth do most mammals have?

A

incisors, canines, premolars, molars

39
Q

the digestive enzymes work best at which temperature?

A

38 C

40
Q

what pH do enzymes in the duodenum require?

A

just above pH 7
