Chap 1 classification Flashcards
organism-
a complete living thing
what are the 7 common characteristics all living things share?
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition
movement-
the ability to change your position or place
respiration-
breaking down glucose/other substances in their cells, using the energy released for metabolic reactions
sensitivity-
able to detect and respond to internal/external changes in the environment
Growth-
A permanent increase in size
Growth can be measured through dry mass
Reproduction-
Able to make new organisms of the same species that are fertile
excretion-
removal of any substances produced through metabolic reactions or that the organism has excess of
nutrition-
utilising substances of the organisims environment for energy, growth, and development.
metabolism-
the chemical reactions that take place in living organisims
Ways we classify organisms:
shared features
consider if they have a common ancestor
species-
the smallest group biologists classify living things into. Reproduction must be able to happen within a species
genus (plural genera)-
species that are closely related
structure of a binomial:
(1) Genus (capital) (2) species
all the kingdoms?
animal, plant, fungus, prokaryote, protoctist
