Chap 6. energy stores and transfers Flashcards
energy-
The quantity that must be changed or transferred to make something happen
What can energy be divided into?
Stores and transfers
gravitational potential energy (GPE)-
The energy store of an object raised up against the force of gravity
The higher the object is above the ground, the ____ its g.p.e
greater
Chemical energy-
the energy stored in bonds between atoms that can be released when chemical reactions take place
Nuclear energy-
the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion.
Nuclear fuel is a store of nuclear energy
Strain/elastic energy-
the energy stored by an object that has been stretched or squashed in an elastic way
Internal energy-
The energy of an object, the total kinetic and potential energies of its particles
thermal energy-
energy transferred from a hotter place to a colder place because of the temperature difference between them
electrical energy-
a result of movement of electrically charged particles
energy transfer-
the process by which energy is relocated from one system to another.
energy stores-
the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time
What are the 4 ways energy can be transferred?
By a force, by heating, by radiation, and by electric current
What does a force doing work mean?
transferring energy from one object to another by a means of a force
Principle of conservation of energy:
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be stored or transferred
