Similie
Makes an explicit comparison between two things using words such as “like,” “as,” “than,” “appears,” or “seems”
Metaphor
Makes an explicit comparison between two unlike things, but does so implicitly, without using words such as “like” or “as”
Implied metaphor
A type of metaphor that compares two things that are not alike without actually mentioning one of those things.
Extended metaphor
A detailed comparison that extends through multiple lines, paragraphs, pages, or an entire work.
Controlling metaphor
A metaphor that is extended across an entire piece of writing.
Pun
A play on words that relies on a word having more than one meaning or sounding like another word.
Synecdoche
A figure in speech in which part of something is used to signify a whole.
Metonymy
In which something closely associated with a subject is substituted for it.
Personification
The attribution of human characteristics to non-human things.
Apostrophe
An address either to someone who is absent and therefore cannot hear the speaker or to something nonhuman that cannot comprehend.
Overstatement/Hyperbole
Adds emphasis without intending to be literally true.
Understatement
In which a phrase says less than intended.
Paradox
A statement that initially appears to be self-contradictory but that, on closer inspection, appears to make sense.
Oxymoron
A condensed form of paradox in which two contradictory words are used together.
Figure of Speech
A form of expression used to convey meaning or heighten effect.
