chap 4 tissues, organ systems, homeostasis Flashcards
4 major tissue types:
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Epithelial:
Protects body surfaces.
Connective:
Supports and binds organs.
Muscle:
Moves body parts.
Nervous:
Transmits electrical signals.
Connective tissue components:
Cells, fibers, ground substance
Ground substance:
Gel-like material in connective tissue, supports cells and fibers.
Fibers in connective tissue:
collagen, reticular, elastic
Collagen:
Strong fibers found in tendons.
Reticular:
Network fibers found in lymphoid organs.
Elastic:
Stretchable fibers found in skin and lungs.
Loose tissue
In organs, provides flexibility.
Dense tissue
In tendons/ligaments, provides strength.
Cartilage healing:
Slow due to limited blood supply
Types of cartilage:
hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
Hyaline:
Found in joints.
Elastic:
Found in ears.
Fibrocartilage:
Found in intervertebral discs.
Bone rigidity:
Caused by mineral salts around collagen fibers.
Bone tissue types:
compact and spongy
Compact:
Dense, forms outer layer.
Spongy:
Lighter, found in ends of bones.
Blood components:
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets.
Lymph function:
Transports immune cells and waste.
