Chap 3A Unit 1 Flashcards
Cell Theory
All organisms are made of cells; all existing cells are produced by other living cells; the cell is the most basic unit of life.
Cytoplasm
A jellylike substance that contains dissolved molecular building blocks- such as proteins, nucleic acids, mineral and ions
Organelle
are structures specialized to perform distinct processes (job function) within the cell
Prokaryotic cell
Do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelle; DNA in the cytoplasm
Eukaryotic Cell
Have nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles; Nucleus is the largest organelle in cell
Robert Hooke
(1665) First to id cells; looked at dead tree cells, He used the three-lens compound microscope to examine thin slices of cork.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
(1674) Created a stronger lense for better viewing of the cell, first to view living cells; analyzed human teeth plaque bacteria
Matthew Scheiden
(1838) First to note plants for made of cells
Theodore Schwann
(1839) all living things are made up of cells; He was struck by the structural similarities between plant cells and the animal cells he had been studying.
Robert Virchow
(1855) All cells come from other living cells
Compound Microscope
A compound microscope contains two or more lenses. Total magnification, the product of the magnifying power of each individual lens, is generally much more
powerful with a compound microscope than with a single lens.
Cell Membrane
Controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell; Acts like a boarder wall
Ribosomes
Molecules where proteins are assembled; cellular machinery responsible for making proteins
