chap 3 powers & exponents Flashcards
powers & exponents
Power
an expression made up of a BASE and EXPONENT
ie: 5sqr2 (5 is base) (2 is exponent) (5sqr2 is power)
Base
the number you multiply by itself in a power
exponent
the number of times you multiply the base in a power (the small num)
ie: 5sqr2 (5x5)
Repeated multiplication
multiplying the number by itself repeatedly
ie: 5x5x5x5x5
Exponential form
a shorter way of repeated multiplication using a base and exponent
ie: 5x5x5x5x5 = 5sqr5
reading exponents
2sqr3 can be read as;
-“two cubed”
-“two to the third”
-“two to the exponent three
-“two to the power of three”
Power with negative bases
If base is neg there watch out
-if the neg base is in () the exponent is EVEN the answer will be + ie: (-2)sqr2 = +4
-if the neg base is in () and the exponent is ODD the answer will - ie: (-2)sqr3 =-8
-if the neg base is not in () the answer will b -
Zero power
any power with the base of 0 is always equal to 0
ie: 0sqr5 = 0
Zero exponent
any power with an exponent of 0 is always 1
ie: 5sqr0 = 1
product of powers
when multiplying powers with the same base you add the exponents to write the product as a single power
ie= 5sqr2 x 5sqr3 = 5sqr5
quotient(division) of powers
when dividing powers with the same base instead of adding you subtract the exponents
ie: 5sqr3 ÷ 5sqr1 = 5sqr2
power of power
when a power is raised to an exponent, multiply the exponents to write the expression with single exponent
ie: (2sq4)sq2 = 2sq4(sq2) = 2sq8
Power of a product
when a product is raised to an exponent you can rewrite each factor in the product with the same exponent
ie: (2x4)sq2 = 2sq2 x 4sq2
power of quotient
when a quotient is raised to an exponent you can rewrite each number in the quotient with the same exponent
ie: (1/4)sq2 = 1sq2/4sq2
Bedmas?
brackets, exponents, division, multiply, adding, subtracting.
expressions w/ power can have a numerical coefficient
ie: -3 (-5)sq2
-3 (+25)
= -75
