Chap 3 - Chemical composition of matter Flashcards
What impact does understanding the chemical composition of matter have on our daily lives?
Identify the properties of substances
What is an element
Elements are the basic building blocks of living and non-living matter. They are the simplest substance; they cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What does the line do in the periodic table
Seperate the metals from the non metals
What are compounds
A compound consist of two or more elements that are chemically combined together by chemical reactions
What are examples of compounds
Common salt, ammonia, baking soda, marble, glass and plastic
What elements is common salt made from
Common salt is sodium chloride made from sodium and chlorine
What elements is ammonia made from
Nitrogen and hydrogen
What elemnts is baking soda made from
Baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate which is made from sodium, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen
What elements is marble made from
Marble is calcium carbonate which is made from calcium, carbon and oxygen
What elements is glass made of
Silicon, calcium, carbon and oxygen
What elements are plsatics made from
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What are the three properties of compounds
- Compounds do not have the same properties as their constituent elements
- The constituent elements of a compound are always chemically combined in a fixed proportion by mass
- A compound cannot be seperated into its consituent elements easily and requires a lot of energy
What is a mixture
A mixture is made up of two or more elements and/or compounds that are not chemically combined
What are some mixtures with elements only
Steel and pewter
What are some mixtures with compounds only
Salt solution and coffee
