Chap 2 - Physical properties of materials Flashcards
Why is it important to know the physical properties of matter?
To classify items easily
What are common materials that you can classify objects into
Fibre
Metal
Ceramic
Glass
Wood
What are some common properties of matter what their uses
Electrical conductivity - How easily electricity flows through an object
Thermal conductivity - How easily heat flows through an object
Melting point - The temp where solid turns into liquid
Boiling point - The temp where liquid turns into gas
Flexibility - A materials ability yo bend without breaking
Strength - A materials ability to carry heavy load without changing its shape permanently
Hardness - A materials ability to resist wear and tear and scratches
Density - The amount of matter in a material in proportion to its volume
What is mass
Mass is the amount matter in an object
What are some apparatus to measure volume
Beaker - Roughly measures the amount of volume
Measuring cylinder - Measures volume up to 1cm3
Volumetric flask - Measures a specific amount of volume
Syringe - Transfers a small amount of volume
Pipette - Transfers a specific amount of water
Bruttette - Transfers water up to 1cm3
What is the displacement method and its purpose
Displacement is used to find volume of irregular objects
1. Measure volume of water inside measuring cylinder
2. Place object into water
3. Measure the volume of water with object inside it
4. Subtract that amount of volume to the volume of the water without the object
What do you do if while conducting the displacement method, the object in the water floats?
Use a sinker to sink the object
What are some apparatus to measure length?
Measuring tape to measure longer and curved lengths
Digital callipers to measure depth and shorter lengths
What are the three parts of a digital calliper
Outside jaw to measure external diameter
Inside jaw to measure internal diameter
Tail to measure depth of object
What is the formula of density
Mass divided by volume
