Chap 2 Module Flashcards
Reactants
Starting material that are converted into products.
Negligible mass
Mass that can be neglected
Hydrogen bond
A weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other.
Covalent bond
Is the sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms.
Molecular mimics
produce similar effects as the natural occurring molecules
Ionic bonds
The type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound.(such a bond forms when the valence electrons of an atom are transferred permanently to another atom.)
Orbital
A shell in which I the electrons move in.
Why do anions have more electrons.
They got it as a result of getting one transferred.
Trace elements
A chemical element that are required by an organism in minute quantities.
Non polar covalent bond
A type of chemical bond that is formed when electrons are shared equally between two atoms.
How do weak chemical bonds such as hydrogen bonds form.
They form when a hydrogen atom that is covalently bonded to an electronegative atom like oxygen or nitrogen is attracted to another electronegative atom.
What is the atom or molecule when the proton number and electron numbers are unequal.
Ion
Polar covalent bond
When atoms with different electro negativities share electrons in a covalent bond.
Electronegativity
The tendency of an atom participating in a covalent bond to attract the bonding electrons.
